Hi everyone, I'm Sarah and this is the "How to be Good?" podcast that explores what it means to be a good person in today's world.

[Podcast Theme Music]

This is a quick thank you and goodbye as we wrap up season one of the How to be Good podcast? I’ll be back early 2023 with season 2, but for now I want to take a few minutes to thank everyone who has listened and supported this podcast since its launch in 2020.

The past 18-months have been incredible. I’ve appreciated every conversation, every email, phonecall and message. And the cherry on top was being recognised in last year’s international People’s Choice podcast awards.

This first series has focused on faith and spirituality – I’ve had conversations with the very individuals who are seen by so many people around the world as a guiding path for how to live a life of goodness. The individuals I’ve interviewed come from dramatically different belief-systems, from Buddhist Abbots and Jewish Rabbis to Pagan Druids and Humanist Celebrants, but there were so many threads of connection through the conversations, and I’ve tried to highlight these in the shorter bitesize episodes.

Each guest has been so kind and generous – not only with their time but with their openness and honesty in each conversation.

So to say goodbye, I want to leave you with their words– here are 13 snippets from each interview, small nuggets of wisdom to take into your week…

1.    Buddhist Abbot, Geshe Tashi
[..] as a human nature, we are social beings. So therefore, you know, try to support whatever you can. Try to support others. That "others" doesn't need to be huge number - it can be just one person.

2.     Rabbi Elli Tikvah Sarah
And one of the main things is that when you see somebody who's got a different kind of skin than yours, or looks different in whatever way, instead of just rushing past them, smile at them and smile at people when you're going along.

3.    Hindu Pandita Indrani Rampersad
let's look at the other person, don't see colour, don't see what you think is beauty or don't see age. Look for the Divinity in that person. Look, look for that piece of divinity that is that person - who also like you has hopes and dreams.

4.    Reverend Angela Berners-Wilson
Be kind to people

5.     Professor Jeff McMahan, Morality Professor
In your relations with other people, please try to be understanding of the other people. Be kind to them. Be gentle, be generous.

6.    Imam Abdulah Polovina
No matter whether Muslim or non-Muslim, or Christian, Jew. I mean, we are all humans. I believe we came from same source, you know, so we need to be there for each other.

7.    Sister Adele Marie Altenhofen
We are so much more alike than different. And what a joy

8.     Andy Phillips, Atheist
So what does it mean to me personally, to be a good person? Empathy is the biggest thing for me.

9.     Jane Blackman , Humanist Celebrant
being kind to people, but also the environment and animals

10.  Melanie Goodchild,   Anishinaabe Kwe
We are taught that we are not the centre of the universe. We do not have a domain. But we are also not subordinate. So, we're not above nature or below nature. We're a part of nature.

11.  Daoist Monk Yun Rou
Nature is not an entity that exists outside of us as a teacher. It is a fabric of which we are an intimate part.

12.  Jenny Uzzell, The Pagan Federation
[...] and if you are rooted in compassion, if that is foundational to you, if that is where you are drawing your nourishment from, then that is going to have a big impact on how you live in the world.

13.  Simran Singh, Sikh
Because what's important is who you are today.

And finally from me, thank you and Goodbye for now.
